All of us old/young enough to embrace the memories of the Core Four dynastic years. Four young men - Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter - coming up through the Yankee system together joining veterans like Bernie Williams, David Cone, Jimmy Key, Tony Fernandez, John Wetland and others.
We watched them grow and dominate for a few years. They have all since retired - this week on YES every day there is a Yankee Classic highlight some point in Derek's remarkable career - his dive into the stands, his 3000th hit, his last game at the Stadium. Jorge was the first to retire followed Mariano, Andy announced his final retirement at the end of 2014 following Mariano's final game at The Stadium (remember Andy's complete game in Houston to end his career) - then last was The Captain, Captain Clutch in 2015. Derek doesn't like to watch baseball if he isn't playing, said he wasn't going to hang around Yankee Stadium after his playing days. This Sunday evening after one complete season away from the game, #2 will be retired to Monument Park - the New York Yankees and Yankee fans will have one last chance to honor, RE2PECT all the wonderful memories this young man has given us. Derek has been busy on some many levels since that last base hit in Boston in 2015 - business ventures have been successful, he awaits approval on becoming a part owner in the Miami Marlins; he has beautiful wife, Hannah, and will be a marvelous Dad to their daughter. Though the final chapter of the Yankee Core Four in regards to baseball will be complete, let us once again say THANK YOU for 20 years of memories - memories which we will always reflect on with smiles. It's going to fun to see them together one last time - only sad part is the game will be on SPN but at least YES will carry the pregame ceremony to honor DEREK SANDERSON JETER.
