The Yankees couldn’t get free agent Martin Maldonado cheap, so their new $324-million ace Gerrit Cole won’t be reunited with a veteran catcher who was behind the plate for 10 of his 33 starts with the Houston Astros last season.

So when Yankees No. 1 catcher Gary Sanchez is resting (or hurt again) in 2020, Cole probably will be throwing to a long-ago teammate who caught him during their high school years.
