Let's think back before criticizing the roster moves: DJ was signed as an IF utility player to give Miguel, Gleyber, & Luke a game off during the week. Miggy went down with TJ surgery; Tulo was to play short with Gleyber at 2nd then DJ would play 2nd when Tulo got games off & GLey was at short. Tulo went down so Gley became primary SS with DJ playing more 2nd. Gio came up to play 3rd - but as much as possible DJ was juggled around sometimes changing positions during a game when called upon. He hadn't played 1st much but worked at it when Bird landed on the IL again. DJ has played every position without missing a beat including at the plate. The trade for Encarncion gave us someone who could DH or play 1st on occasion to give Luke a break. With Luke on the IL, and now Edwin going down, DJ played the DHer at 1st - but in fairness that's not his #1 position - (a) can't expect him to play every for however time it takes either Luke or Edwin to return (b) is still needn't to rotate at the other IF spots - bringing Mike Ford who plays a good 1st base made sense.
Question as to who replaces Hicks remains - if the game was on YES we'd have an answer but SPN isn't giving that info - trying to check the dugout for Frazier or Estrada or a new face.
