I'm from Canada but nowhere near, T.O, Hitter. Ya gotta go far to the east of TO to find me. Province of New Brunswick, not the city of New Brunswick, NJ!!!
It's true I didn't get to see Guidry during his Cy Young-winning, career year of '78 but once I jumped on the Yankee train in '81 I got to see/hear/follow Guidry and Dave Righetti enough along with Tommy John, Jerry Mumphrey, Oscar Gamble, Bob Watson, Willie Randolph, Lou Piniella, Bucky Dent/Larry Milbourne, Dave Winfield, Reggie and Graig Nettles et al that I couldn't help but take a shine to them! I am also glad that although the Yankees had some frustrating seasons after '81 there were some years where Guidry was still lights out. Maybe not on a par with '78 but he was still electric often enough that I was just in awe!
I was never a Jays fan because growing up they weren't very good and their broadcasts on TV were, in a word, awful(sleep inducing then as they are now). Also, they were a relatively new franchise too so there was no tradition or history to draw me in that way. Naw, I remember as a young lad listening to the Yankees games at night on the radio and loving listening to the Scooter call Yankee games.
I think at that time they were broadcast on WABC 770 on the dial. That station's signal was strong enough at night that I could pick up the Yankee broadcasts all the way up here in the Atlantic provinces. Phil Rizzuto must have drawn me in because I never really cared much for the Jays and that's how it's been for me ever since I started really following and enjoying and obsessing over sports with the Yankees being at the top of the mountain.I have forgotten who worked with the Scooter in the radio broadcast booth at that time
. Bobby Murcer maybe?(nope, I checked and Murcer was still playing). Suzyn Waldman might have been the on field reporter then I'm not sure. I bet toga or Hitter or Shaky G or perhaps others here on this board might remember who the Scooter's broadcasting partner/s were back then.
Anytime I see that episode of Seinfeld with the Scooter's key ring that George had that is sent soaring in a huge gush of water from the punctured water main I laugh pretty hard. Can't get the sound of 'HOLY COW'
whenever they squeezed the head of the Scooter key ring out of my mind, haha!
Hitter, if by some miracle I am ever able to make it to the Bronx to see a Yankees game I will be sure and let you know, eh!!!
GO YANKEES!!!!!!!
