A Few Thoughts

Think back to the expectations of April & May - our pitching rotation Severino who dominated until that AS break seems to have screwed up his momentum & he's still trying to get the mechanics aligned (Larry Rothhild doesn't seem to be helping much); Tanaka who has not been consistent yet not horrible; CC & we knew from the beginning he would need to be careful & watch his innings, the DL was no surprise & gives him time to recharge for the stretch; Sonny Grey who can't pitch in pinstripes (think we all agree even in the pen he struggles); Jordy Montgomery down for TJ followed by Domingo German, Jonathan Loisigana.. Cessa is proving he's not ready for prime time. Before the deadline Cash made trade for Lance Lynn with the thought he would pitch in Boston where he had good luck only Grey's disaster threw that out; J. Happ who has been solid except he goes on the DL with hand, foot & mouth disease. A bright spot was Chance showing good stuff in his start in Funkway. The pen has gone through streaks of very good to no command. Zach Britton can be dominating but he's still recovering from surgery - anyone who had surgery knows that it can take months sometimes years for the full recovery.
Greg Bird has been disappointing so far - but his surgery was on his ankle and the feet are important in balance & timing at the plate. Is there any need to discuss what Judge & Sanchez mean to the lineup? When Cash traded several outfield prospects to get pitching, no one knew Judge would fracture his wrist with hbp. Stanton has stepped up with his bat but can't play the field right now to protect his nagging hammie. That has left Shane Robinson or Neil Walker as choices for Aaron Boone. It doesn't take a desperate situation for other teams to demand more in a trade from the Yankees than with any other team including the Sux - so acquiring a 4th experienced OFer could be costly but sadly seems necessary - we have no idea how long before Judge can swing a bat, let alone return to the lineup even longer to get his timing back.
While we've witnessed a team that was on target to win 105+ games and destroy the team home record for a single season, we now cross our fingers that we can even maintain homefield advantage in a WC playoff. That's baseball folks - the good, the bad, the ugly - we're seeing it all.
