Yankees prospects thriving in Arizona Fall League
The future remains bright for a Yankees organization still flush with young talent

The New York Yankees have been lauded over the last 18 months for building up their farm system into one of the very best in baseball, and even though their postseason run has come to an end, several young prospects are continuing to impress against some of the best young players in the game.
The Arizona Fall League has seen plenty of success from top-level Yankees prospects in recent years, with Gleyber Torres winning the league's MVP honor a year ago at the age of 19, while current Yankees first baseman Greg Bird took home the same award two years prior.
This season, eight prospects from the Yankees' minor league ranks have made their way west, including Kyle Holder, Estevan Florial, Thairo Estrada, Billy McKinney, Albert Abreu, Justus Sheffield, Cody Carroll and Andrew Schwaab.
Among that group, three rank among the top-10 Yankees' prospects (per MLB.com), and several have already made strong first impressions for the Scottsdale Scorpions this year in Fall League play.
PITCHERS
Sheffield, 21, has made three starts at time of publication, and has gone 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA over 14 innings. The Yankees' No. 4 prospect has put his impressive strikeout stuff on full display in Arizona, with 15 punch-outs versus just two walks to complement his 0.86 WHIP. Sheffield has been called a pitcher with 
Abreu, 22, has been called by one scout "the best pitcher I have seen" in the Fall League so far, after coming to the Bronx as part of the return for the Brian McCann trade with Houston last November. The 6-foot-2 right-hander has made two starts, thrown 10 innings and allowed just one run for an ERA of 0.90. Abreu has struck out 11, walked three, and has allowed just six hits in those outings.
Carroll, a 25-year-old 6-foot-5 righty who pitched to a 2.54 ERA in the low-minors this past season, has yet to allow a run in any of his three outings for the Scorpions this year. He's given up two hits, notched one save, and struck out six batters in four innings of work. Carroll ranks 25th on MLB.com's list of the team's top 30 prospects.
Schwaab, a 24-year-old righty who spent 2017 between High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton, struggled out of the gates in Fall League play allowing three runs off three hits over 2 1/3 innings. He did pick up a strikeout, and based on his success in the minors this season should see more opportunities to improve his Fall League numbers after just a single appearance.
HITTERS
Florial, New York's No. 3 prospect, had a breakout season in Low-A ball this year, slashing .298/.372/.479 with 43 extra-base hits and 23 stolen bags. That explosive offense has carried into Fall, as Florial's off to a stellar start in his first six games, sporting a .407 batting average and a .556 slugging percentage. Florial's strikeouts are up (11 K), but at 19 years old he's still got plenty of time to fine-tune his tools.
Estrada, 21, was a frequently discussed name in trade rumors over the course of the year, but the Yankees managed to hang onto the versatile infielder who thrived in Trenton this season, slashing .301/.353/.392 with 29 extra-base hits, 48 RBI & 72 runs. Through seven games for the Scorpions, Estrada is still crushing the ball to the tune of a .345/.387/.414 slash line with six runs, a pair of doubles and four RBI.
McKinney, 23, has been on a tear in Arizona so far, slugging four extra-base hits and driving in 11 runs over his first five games. The 23rd-ranked Yankees prospect has plenty of competition in front of him on the outfield depth chart, but he's forced his name into the conversation with a huge performance this past year in Double- and Triple-A.
Holder, a former first-round pick in 2015, is leading the Scorpions with a team-high .450 batting average in his first five games, to go along with a triple and home run. The multi-positional infield prospect hit .271 in 104 games with High-A Tampa in 2017, and will be looking to showcase his skill set throughout the higher levels of the organization this coming season.
The 5-6 Scorpions sit third in the Fall League's Eastern division, but the importance of the league is to see how proficient baseball's top prospects can play against stiff competition. The Yankees certainly have no shortage of talented young players, and so far it's been an impressive start for the Bombers representing their squad in Arizona.
